Description
Luis Cañas Rioja Crianza (often written Luis Canas) is a classic Spanish red wine from Rioja Alavesa, the hillside sub-zone sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria. Made mostly from Tempranillo with a little Garnacha for extra fruit, it delivers the velvety, oak-framed style that makes a good Rioja Crianza so easy to enjoy.
Tasting notes
Ruby red in the glass, with a clean nose of balsamic notes, plum and fine cedary oak. The palate is smooth and velvety, with red cherry and raspberry fruit, gentle spice and toasted oak, and a hint of liquorice. The finish is pleasant and lasting, with red fruit and a touch of eucalyptus.
About the producer
In 1970, Luis Cañas became the first winemaker in Rioja Alavesa to bottle his young wine instead of selling it in bulk. The family winery in Villabuena de Álava is now run by his son Juan Luis and works with hundreds of small plots of old vines on chalky-clay soils. The Crianza is aged for 12 months in French and American oak, then rests in bottle before release.
Food pairing
A natural partner for roast lamb, grilled red meats, sausages and roast chicken or duck. It is also good with medium-aged cheeses and hearty stews, from beans and chorizo to a slow-cooked casserole. Serve at around 16°C.
Available at Matson’s Wine Store — Youghal, Bandon and Grange — with delivery throughout Ireland.
